Getting started

Getting a Claude API key

Six steps at platform.claude.com. Buy credit before you make the key, or every request is refused.

Before you start

A Claude.ai subscription does not include API access. The API uses a separate account with separate billing. You need to buy API credit even if you already pay for Claude in the browser.

The steps

  1. Go to https://platform.claude.com and sign up, or sign in.
  2. Open Settings, then Billing, and add a card.
  3. Click Add credit and buy some. Five or ten dollars is enough to translate a site and see what it costs.
  4. Open Settings, then API keys, and click Create key.
  5. Name it after the site it is for, choose an expiry, and click Create.
  6. Copy the key into WordPress under WPGlotty, Settings, Providers and keys. Set it to Translates and click Save settings.

Buy credit before creating the key. Without a balance, the account refuses every request. This can look like a problem with the key.

A limit at both ends

Under Settings and Billing, set a monthly spending limit for your account. WPGlotty also has a limit in dollars under Settings. Set both. WPGlotty’s limit stops its own requests, and the provider’s limit covers everything that uses the key.
