Translating WooCommerce e-mail

WPGlotty records the order’s language and uses it for WooCommerce e-mails to the customer. You can preview these e-mails and correct their wording before they are sent.

Which language an e-mail uses

WPGlotty records the customer’s checkout language on the order. This works with both classic and block checkout. Later e-mails about that order use the recorded language too, including notices that the order is complete or has been refunded.

The order edit screen shows the language stored on that order.

E-mails to you, such as new order notices, stay in your site’s own language. This applies even when the customer places the order in another language.

How WPGlotty picks the language

WPGlotty checks these sources in order and uses the first available language.

  1. A developer filter, wpglotty_email_language, if one is set.
  2. The language stored on the order.
  3. The language on the customer’s account.
  4. The language the customer is browsing in.
  5. The site’s own language, if nothing else applies.

Only WooCommerce’s own mail

WPGlotty translates only WooCommerce’s own mail. It leaves contact form messages and other e-mails sent through wp_mail unchanged.

A form e-mail contains the visitor’s own words, so you receive them exactly as they were written.

Switching it off

Go to WPGlotty → Settings → Translation settings → E-mail. The switch is called “Send WooCommerce e-mail in the language the customer ordered in”. It is on by default.

Turn it off to send all WooCommerce e-mails in your site’s own language. WPGlotty still records each order’s language. If you turn translation back on, it also applies to orders placed while the setting was off.

A one-time notice on WPGlotty’s screens explains this and links to the setting. Click “Do not show this again” to hide the notice across your site.

The E-mail translation screen

WooCommerce → E-mail translation lists every WooCommerce e-mail. The Sending column shows whether WooCommerce sends it (On or Off). The Goes to column shows who receives it: the customer or you. You can filter by either column.

Each e-mail has a link for every language.

Disabled e-mails are marked as off, with a link to enable them in WooCommerce.

Opening an e-mail

Open an e-mail to see two panes. The left pane lists its text in reading order, and the right one previews the e-mail as WooCommerce would send it. Click a line in either pane to select it in both.

The preview uses WooCommerce’s own sample order, never a customer’s, and nothing is sent.

WPGlotty reads the complete e-mail, not only WooCommerce’s three settings fields: subject, heading and extra text. This also includes wording added by a template plugin.

Every line on the left also appears in the e-mail on the right.

Translating a line

Type and save a translation for each line, or click Translate with AI. Click Translate what is left to fill in all untranslated lines.

Placeholders, such as the order number, are protected. The screen tells you: “The message fills this in when it is sent. Put words around it, not over it.”

Translate with AI and Translate what is left use your WPGlotty credits, or your own key on a paid plan. You can type and save translations on any licence, including the free one. When neither option is available, the buttons stay visible and a message explains why.

See it for yourself

Open WooCommerce → E-mail translation and preview one of your e-mails in another language. You can correct any wording that needs attention. Opening an e-mail does not send it.

Advanced: for developers

The filter wpglotty_translate_emails turns e-mail translation off for a message, or extends it to other mail.

Use the wpglotty_email_language filter to set the language for a specific message.
