Getting a DeepL API key

Five steps at deepl.com. The free plan translates half a million characters a month and gives you a key that ends in :fx.

Before you start

DeepL API Free translates 500,000 characters a month at no cost. DeepL API Pro has no monthly limit and charges per character. Both are separate from a DeepL subscription for the website or the apps, which does not include API access.

The steps

  1. Go to https://www.deepl.com/pro-api and sign up for DeepL API Free or DeepL API Pro.
  2. Open https://www.deepl.com/your-account/keys.
  3. Open the tab called API Keys and Limits.
  4. Click Create key and name it after the site it is for.
  5. Copy the key from the window into WordPress under WPGlotty, Settings, Providers and keys. Set it to Translates and click Save settings.

A free key ends in :fx and uses a different API address from a paid key. WPGlotty recognises the ending and chooses the correct address. You do not have to tell it which plan you are on. Unlike the other providers, DeepL lets you copy your key again later from the same table.

What DeepL will not do

DeepL translates existing text at a lower cost, but cannot write new text, such as a missing search description. It does not follow tone instructions.

If DeepL is your only provider, the editor hides buttons for writing new text. Add Claude, Gemini or OpenAI alongside it to handle those tasks. DeepL can then handle bulk translation at a lower cost.
