WPGlotty credits

How WPGlotty translates your site without a key of your own: what a word costs, what you start with, and what happens when the balance runs out.

What WPGlotty credits are

WPGlotty credits pay for WPGlotty’s own translation engine. You do not need a separate provider key or account, and there is no provider set-up.

You pay per word. All sites on your account share one balance, and you receive an invoice from us for each top-up.

How a word is counted

WPGlotty counts words per target language: a 1,000-word page translated into two languages counts as 2,000 words. Markup is not counted as words. However, a string that is mostly markup costs at least one word per hundred characters. Text with no letters, such as a price or number, costs nothing.

We charge the larger of the source and translation word counts. Translations often run a little longer than the original. We charge only for returned translations, so failed requests cost nothing. If the plugin asks for a repair because a translation came back with broken formatting, that retry is free too.

Welcome words

You get 5,000 welcome words when you first activate the plugin on a site, once per account and once per site. A second site on your account gets no extra welcome words. Neither does a second account for the same site. How many pages this covers depends on their length.

You can use your welcome words for automatic translation on a free licence. You need a subscription to buy more words or use your own provider key.

Buying more

You need a subscription to buy word packs. Check your account for current pack sizes and prices, which exclude VAT. You pay through Stripe and receive an invoice. Word packs never expire, and any site on your account can use them.

You can also add a yearly word allowance using the box at checkout or later on your billing page. Check those pages for the current allowance and price for your plan. Prices are per year and exclude VAT. If you add words mid-year, the charge is pro rata for the rest of the year.

Each yearly renewal adds a full year of words on top of what you have left, so unused plan words carry over to the next year. They only expire when the plan ends. Bought word packs are not affected, and WPGlotty uses plan words before packs. Words you add in the middle of a year carry over in the same way.

  1. Open https://wpglotty.com/account/billing/ and sign in.
  2. Pick a pack and pay on Stripe’s page.
  3. The words are on your account as soon as the payment goes through. The invoice follows by e-mail.

Contact support for a refund of the unused part of a pack. We remove the corresponding share of its words.

At zero, and keeping track

At zero, translation pauses unless your own key takes over. Waiting jobs do not fail, and existing translations keep working. After a top-up, translation usually resumes within about ten minutes, though WordPress scheduled tasks can delay it. A site that reaches its monthly word limit pauses until next month, even with words left.

You can see your balance on the plugin’s settings screen. An indicator in the WordPress admin bar turns orange at 30% of your last top-up and red at 10%. Before a whole-site run, the Translation status screen estimates the words needed and compares that with your balance.

You will get an e-mail when a tenth of your last top-up is left, one when the words run out, and one after you buy a pack.

Your account’s credits page shows your balance and how long it should last, based on usage over the last 30 days. It breaks down usage by day, language, site and type of work. You can set a monthly word limit for each site. You also get a daily receipt for each site.

A whole-site run sends several translation batches at once. How long it takes depends on your site’s content, hosting and WordPress scheduled tasks.

Credits, or your own key

Under WPGlotty, then Settings, you can choose WPGlotty credits, your own provider key or both. Using your own key needs a paid plan. On a free licence, automatic translation uses credits only.

Use your own key on a paid plan if you want a particular provider at its rates. WPGlotty sets no word limit for your key and adds nothing per word to your provider’s bill.

Bought word packs and welcome words keep working after your plan ends. Unused plan words expire, and your own provider key stops working.

What translates first

Choose which translates first under WPGlotty, then Settings, Providers and keys, in the What translates first row. This choice appears once you have added a key of your own.

  • WPGlotty credits first, then my own key: translation uses your credits first. When they run out, your own key takes over without pausing translation
  • Only my own key: your credits are left alone, and everything is translated on your own key
  • Only WPGlotty credits: nothing is charged to your own key. When credits run out, translation pauses until you add more
