Getting started

Getting a Gemini API key

Three steps at Google AI Studio. It is free to start, and the paid tier takes one more step.

Before you start

Gemini and Google Translate are separate Google services. Gemini is a writing model, like Claude and GPT, and follows your glossary and tone instructions. Google Translate is a lower-cost translation engine, but cannot write new text. The services use different keys from different account pages. This article covers Gemini.

The steps

  1. Go to https://aistudio.google.com/apikey and sign in with the Google account you want the bill on.
  2. Click Create API key. If you have never used Google Cloud, AI Studio makes a project for you.
  3. Copy the key into WordPress under WPGlotty, Settings, Providers and keys. Set it to Translates and click Save settings.

Switching to the paid tier

A new key starts on the free tier, which has a low daily limit. A whole-site translation can reach that limit.

To increase the limit, open the key on the same page. Follow the link to its Google Cloud project and enable billing.

On the free tier, Google may use the content you send to improve its models. On the paid tier, it does not. Consider switching before a whole-site translation, even if the free daily limit covers your needs.
