Getting an OpenAI API key

Six steps at platform.openai.com. Load credit before you make the key, or every request is refused.

Before you start

ChatGPT Plus and the API are billed separately. A ChatGPT subscription does not include API credit, and you cannot spend API credit on ChatGPT. The API is prepaid: you add credit and use it as you translate.

The steps

  1. Go to https://platform.openai.com and sign up, or sign in.
  2. Open Settings, then Billing, and add a card.
  3. Click Add to credit balance and add some credit. Five dollars is enough to translate a site and see the real cost.
  4. Go to https://platform.openai.com/api-keys and click Create new secret key.
  5. Name it after the site it is for, leave the permissions at full access, and click Create secret key.
  6. Copy the key into WordPress under WPGlotty, Settings, Providers and keys. Set it to Translates and click Save settings.

Add credit before creating the key. Without a balance, the account refuses every request, which can look like a problem with the key. The key is shown only once. If you lose it, delete it and create another.

A limit at both ends

On the Billing page, you can set a monthly budget and an e-mail alert. WPGlotty has its own spending limit in dollars under Settings. Set both to monitor provider spending and limit requests from WPGlotty.
